Restoration without Alteration

Even if paintings are properly cared for, they will become dirty and need to be carefully cleaned to bring back the original colors, light and shadow. At times the old varnish needs to be removed because it has also deteriorated. However, given enough time a painting will deteriorate beyond a condition of ever being recognized. Restoration is a must. When properly restored, a painting will not divulge that any repairs have been made. And here is where two schools of thought come into play. In museums you only need to look at the old masterpieces from a side angle and you will often see a multitude of visible restorations. One school says that a restoration should never alter a painting. The other school of thought says to make repairs that are not noticed, and are as if the artist had made the repair themselves.
